Carolyn F. Sutherland died Monday, November 19, 2018 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Home.  Caroline F. Aubrey was born October 19, 1943 in Springhill, Louisiana to Flora Aubrey.  Carolyn moved to Kansas City Missouri at an early age and was raised by her late grandparents, T.W. and Louise Aubrey.  She changed her name from Caroline to Carolyn in her early school years.

Carolyn was educated in the public schools of Kansas City, Missouri where she was a graduate of Central High School in 1961.  Carolyn was known to many as "Daisy." Some would say she was a sunshine character during her school years.  She was voted "Best Actress" in High School, her senior year.

Carolyn was a humble, dedicated member of Friendship Baptist Church.  She was a member of Judah Sheepfold and served in the following ministries throughout her years at Friendship:  Girls Auxiliary, Sunday School, Youth Women's Association (YWA), Baptist Training Union (BTU), Junior Matrons and Women's Missionary Union (WMU).  She served as Vice President recruiting members.  She also was a member of Culinary, Ushers and Church Nurses. She was a Youth friend at Melcher Elementary in the Kansas City, Missouri School District.

Carolyn's work career began in 1962.  Her first job was a clerk carrier for the U.S. Post Office for two years, followed by working at Western Electric for six years.  She went on maternity leave from Western Electric and six months later joined the staff of St. Luke's Hospital as a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) in the Emergency Room (ER). She loved the work so much, she became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), eventually she received an Associate Degree in Applied Science from Penn Valley Community College and became a Registered Nurse (RN).

During Carolyn's years as a Registered Nurse, she was a Flight Nurse transporting patients across the Midwest.  She also trained nurses in the hospital on how to deal with victims involved in sexual assault.

Carolyn was the first African American nurse to work in the Emergency Room department in St. Luke's Hospital.  Carolyn earned an employee of the month award and the clinical excellence award in nursing.  While working in the ER, in 1976 she also joined the Army Reserves as an enlisted soldier and remained in the reserves for over 20 years and retired as a Captain.  She worked in the ER for 18 years until she transferred to the Surgery Department where she worked the next 21 years until she retired on January 28, 2010.

Carolyn met a young man in 1964.  She married the young man, George Sutherland, Jr. in Kansas City, MO on July 7, 1970.  She was a season ticket holder and a lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan.  She loved cooking and making spicy Gumbo.  She strived on helping others anywhere she was. She was often known for stepping in at a store or the side of the road to offer her assistance.  Colleagues called her a superhero due to her tireless efforts.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her mother, Flora Aubrey McDonald of Grand Prairie, Texas; her husband, George Sutherland Jr., Kansas City, MO, beloved daughter, April F. Sutherland, Belton, MO; two sisters, Mary Ann Lewis, and Ernestine McDonald of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two brothers, Raymond McDonald (Janice), and Thomas McDonald of Grand Prairie, Texas; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Service for Mrs. Sutherland will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, November 29, 2018, at Friendship Baptist Church.  Burial Leavenworth National Cemetery.  Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until service time Thursday at the church.
