Durrie Esther Lewis was born in Sulphur Springs, Texas on July 21, 1938, to Durrie Lewis and Verna Lewis (Berry).  He was the oldest of two sons.

Durrie is preceded in death by his mother, Verna Lewis; father, Durrie Lewis; sister, Eddie Pryor; ex-wife, Joann Mendenhall; and daughter, Leslie Mourning.

Durrie attended Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas where he graduated with multiple degrees.

Durrie was married to Joann Deloris. Together they had a daughter, Leslie Dawn.  This marriage was dissolved.

Durrie later married Sugar Lee, and together they raised 3 children, Yolanda, Elroy, and Michelle.  This marriage was dissolved.

Durrie served in the United States Army, for many years, as a high-ranking officer. He later worked for the city of Kansas City as a Civil Engineer for the Core of Engineers.

Durrie gave his life to Christ at an early age. He attended Friendship Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri, where he was a member and deacon for many years.

Durrie always enjoyed fishing and did so as long as he was able.  He was a devoted family man and was always willing to help those close to him in any way he could.

Durrie is survived by his brothers, Ronald Lewis (Brenda) and Donald Lewis (Sandra); sister, Gloria Green (George); grandson, Nathaniel Mourning, II; great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Alexandria, and Amayah Mourning, and a host of other family and loved ones.
