Essie Mae Berry was born in Chunky, MS and was the only child born to the union of Dennis Berry and Leatha Nelson-Berry on May 13, 1933. She attended school in Mississippi and graduated from high school at an early age.

While in nursing school, Essie met Jimmie L. Garrett. Upon completing Nursing school, they were united in holy matrimony February 1955. Jimmie Garrett, Jr. was born November of that same year. In 1958, the family moved to Kansas City and their daughter, Deborah Garrett was born shortly thereafter.

1958 was a big year for Essie. She was hired at St. Joseph Hospital where she would remain for over 50 years. She also became a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church, where she was very involved and worked with Children's Church and Sunday school.

. Essie's entire career in the Kansas City area was with St. Joseph Health Center where she worked as a Registered Nurse for over 50 years. At some point, Essie received a Bachelor's degree at Park College. She also did Volunteer reading and tutoring in schools.

Essie was preceded in death by her parents Dennis and Leatha Berry; bonus siblings Dennis Berry, Jr. Peter Berry, Brenda Fazon; her loving, husband of 67 years, Jimmie Garrett, Sr.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory: her son Jimmie Garrett, Jr. (Barbara); daughter Deborah Garrett; grandsons, Steven M. Arps, Michael Garrett, Jordon Garrett, Elliott Garrett; great-grandchildren, Nyla Arps, Steven M. Arps, Jr., Kaydon Garrett; bonus siblings Daisy Clay (Val), Jimmie Dale (Doris),

Merlinda Berry, Dandy Berry (Crystal), Sandy Davis (Terry), Mattie Brown (Jarrett), Michael Berry (Zoe), William Berry (Rosie) and a host of other family and friends.

Services for Mrs. Garrett will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, November 26, 2022 at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. Burial Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Friends may call from 10am until service time Saturday at the church.
