Ms. Gloria T. Lewis was the oldest of 15 children.  Both parents preceded her in death, her mother Delores Lewis passed just a few years ago along with her brother, Ronnie Lewis of Las Vegas, youngest sister, Delores Lewis-Walker and brother, Michael Lewis.  During the last month of her life she expressed how glad she was that she returned to Kansas City, Missouri after 27 years.  She said, "she was glad she got a chance to reconnect with family."

The Story She Wanted Told:

Gloria graduated in 1969, from East High School, located on Van Brunt in Kansas City, Missouri.  She enjoyed the challenging work but had to work harder just to receive what she was due…She understood the need to integrate the schools but said LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL was where she should have been allowed to attend.  She hated being the only minority in certain higher performing classes because she endured a lot of the resentment and hatred from the staff as well as the other students.  She expressed the mental damage she endured from East High School and how it affected her life.  All she wanted was to learn, and further her education but what she received was violence and hatred due to the times.  She stated due to the things going on in school and out she just wanted to leave Kansas City, Missouri.

Gloria stated she was amazed with how things had changed when she returned home and regretted waiting so long to return.  She said it was the Catholic faith that helped her keep going all these years.

Gloria did continue her education.  She received her Master's Degree with honors from UMKC.  Gloria was then accepted into the doctorates program but unfortunately she learned how sick she really was and had no choice but to decline the offer.

Services for Ms. Lewis will held 10:00 A.M. Monday, February 19, 2018, at Saint Vincent De Paul Catholic Church with Father Michael Goldade officiating.  Burial Blue Ridge Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until service time Monday at the church.
