Harrison Herbert McCallop, Sr. was born at home, the sixth child of Lula Margaret Oldham, and David Jesse McCallop Sr. in Muncie, KS October 1, 1929.

He grew up in Muncie, Holliday and Shawnee, KS.  He attended Holliday Elementary school and graduated from Sumner High School at the age of 16.  He married the love of his life, Dolly M. Trigg on March 23, 1949, in Olathe, KS.  They made their home in Holliday KS.  To this union, five children were born.

Harrison was employed at Loring Rock Quarry for many years.  In 1965, he began his career with Ford Motor Co., Claycomo, MO as the Parts Department Manager.  He retired after 22 years with Ford.  At the time of his retirement, he was Superintendent of Material Handling.

Harrison dedicated his life to Christ at an early age and was one of the first members of Community Missionary Baptist Church in Holliday, KS after it was organized in 1953. He loved the Lord and he loved Community serving as Deacon for more than 50 years.  He was Chairman of the Deacon Board at the time of his death. He worked tirelessly for the church.  He literally built Community's second church with his two hands.  He would go over and work on the church after working long shifts at Ford.  He oversaw the building of the third location when the church was forced to move 2002, from the hill in Holliday, KS. He had a passion for woodwork.   The church's Pulpit furniture, Communion table and fellowship hall cabinetry was built by Harrison.  Last year, he built beautiful replicas of the Ark of the Covenant for Community and its sister church, Agape New Beginnings.   He would often encourage the church telling them "It ain't all bad."

A 33 ^rd degree, Harrison was a member of the Southgate Lodge #101, Merriam, KS.  Through the years, he held many offices including Grand Master and Grand Publicity.  Currently, Harrison was the one and only Grand Craftsman for the state of KS.  He was widely known for crafting dark and light wood gavels for the Grand Masters of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of KS and for the Grand Lodge of Prince Hall Masons of KS.  One on his gavels, which signifies unity between the two Grand Masonic Lodges, is at the F & AM Grand Lodge in Topeka, KS.  His gavels were not limited to KS, one made it all the way to the White House in Washington, DC; that gavel belongs to our former President Barack Obama.

At retirement, Harrison returned to his roots and he and Dolly moved to a farm in Fontana, KS.  He loved the farm and he was very active with conservation.  He served many years on the Lake Region Resource Conservation & Development Board and the Miami County Conservation District. He was a founding member of the Kansas Black Farmers Association.  His conservation efforts were recognized nationally when he received the National Small Farmer Award in 2004.

An avid hunter, in the lean early years, he provided for his family and neighbors in Holliday with game he hunted.  He and Dolly belonged to a hunting club comprised of relatives and friends.  The club took many hunting trips over the years.  He shared his love of hunting with his son, son-in-law and great-grandson.

Harrison loved to research his ancestral roots.  He and Dolly traveled the country researching McCallop history.  They, along with several members of the McCallop Family, were instrumental in starting the McCallop Family Reunion which later evolved into the McCallop-Graves-Mitchell Reunion.  From birth records to death records and everything in between, he tirelessly documented much of the McCallop Family history.

Harrison was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.  He was an avid supporter of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  The distance, the cost or time involved didn't matter to him.  Dad/Grandpa was going to be there.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Dolly Mae, both parents and two brothers, Leon Oldham McCallop and David Jesse McCallop Jr.

He leaves to cherish his memories his children, Harriett D. Herbert (Ulysses) Spring Hill, KS, Harrison H. McCallop Jr., Fontana, KS, Marvin R. McCallop, Olathe, KS, Rodney L. McCallop (Cheryl), Gardner, KS, and Margaret K. Doss (DeWayne), Lee Summit, MO; one brother, Fred Ray McCallop (Mildred), KCMO, two sisters, Ruth N. White, Olathe, KS and Grace P. Jones, KCMO.; thirteen grandchildren, eighteen great- grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

Services for Mr. McCallop will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Cross Road Christian Church in Shawnee, KS.  Burial Memorial Gardens Cemetery.  Friends may call from 6-9 P.M. Friday (today) at the church and 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the church.
