Herbert Lee Nickerson was born in October 29, 1934, in Dallas, Texas, to parents Hubert and Lillian Nickerson. He was the second of four children. He had one brother, Hubert Jr.; and two sisters, Juanita and Julia.

His family moved to the Kansas City, Missouri area when he was very young, and he attended school there. After high school, Herbert continued to pursue additional certifications and education to stay ahead. The world was very difficult and dark during the 1950s and 1960s. He would often work two jobs to make ends meet. Herbert was preceded in death by both of his parents and two siblings, Hubert, Jr. and Juanita.

In 1956, Herbert married his sweetheart, Verlene. To their union, three sons were born: Bryan, Kevin, and Keith. Herbert loved being a father and was both firm and direct. He stressed hard work and honesty.

He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years. He was a very talented person. He enjoyed a season of professional modeling and acting along with his wife. They were able to travel together and perform in several commercial and media productions. He was also a good cook and enjoyed fishing. Herbert could fix just about anything. Though his sons often laughed that he was "tinkering. "  After his retirement, Herbert kept a running list and assisted family members and community members with small repairs.

He had a servant's heart. As a grandpa, he attended high school and college football games to cheer on his boys.  His younger grandkids lovingly called him "Fifi." That name melted his heart until the very end.

Herbert accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1989 at age 55. He often said that this was the greatest decision of his life that changed every area of his life. Overnight Herbert became a serious student of God's Word. He spent his first years in Christian service at Bannister Road Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Dwight Scott in Kansas City, Missouri. He later joined Grace Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri, where he served under the leadership of Pastor Aaron Lavender and Pastor Brett Campbell. While serving at Grace, Herbert loved music and was often called upon to narrate choir musicals. He was a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, AWANA's Leader, Celebrate Recovery Class Leader, and Bible Study Teacher.  Herbert believed in the saving power of Jesus Christ that had radically changed his life. He had a special gift for breaking down the scripture to anyone who would listen. His caring eyes and infectious smile flowed from his redeemed heart.

Herbert Lee Nickerson , 91, of Kansas City, Missouri, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by his family.

He leaves to cherish his life, his beloved wife and help meet of 69 years, Verlene Nickerson of Kansas City, MO: three sons, Bryan Nickerson (Karla), Aurora, CO, Kevin Nickerson of Kansas City, MO, Keith Nickerson (Regina) of Denver, CO; one sister, Julia Williams of Kansas City, KS; 8 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.

Herbert Nickerson will never be forgotten. The Lord of Host was there to receive him into Glory on November 30, 2025. He entered into the joy of the Lord. Fifi is alive forevermore!
