James Lee Higgs , born on July 30, 1951, to Laconia and Eunice Higgs as the middle child of 12 in Greenfield, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2024, in Kansas City, Missouri, with his wife by his side. James was preceded in death by his infant son, Baby Boy Higgs; his father, Laconia Cornelius Higgs; his mother, Eunice Higgs Simmons, and her husband; as well as his sisters, Betty and Trudy Higgs.

After graduating from Greenfield High School in 1969, James attended the University of Tennessee at Martin. On January 13, 1973, he was joined in holy matrimony with Shirley Ann Taylor, and they were blessed with 51 years together. After spending time in Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois, the couple settled in Kansas City, MO, to raise their children, Tessa Higgs and Byron Higgs. In Kansas City, James served as a corrections officer for the Jackson County Detention Center for nearly 30 years, retiring in 2014. He left behind a legacy of being tough but fair, as well as compassionate towards his coworkers and inmates alike. A testament to that reputation was the enthusiastic greetings he often received from the formerly incarcerated while out and about town, as well as the lasting friendships he held with former coworkers.

James was an amazing cook, with his barbeque ribs being legendary. He loved sharing his incredible food with family and friends, particularly at backyard cookouts, where he enjoyed watching his grandkids play in the yard. James had a profound love for music in all forms, with jazz being his favorite. He passed that love of jazz on to his grandkids, something he was infinitely proud of. He was an avid sports fan, faithfully supporting the Chicago Bears, Bulls, and White Sox, as well as the Tennessee Volunteers, always cheering them on with great passion. "Da Bears!!!"

James was a man of few words but immense generosity, always willing to give his very last to anyone in need. Known for his "mean old man" persona, which he had been perfecting for at least 50 years, he'll be fondly remembered for welcoming visitors with his signature hello "grunt" as they walked in the door. He was affectionately considered "Pop" and "Pawpaw" by dozens who cherished his presence, and his door was always open for any loved ones who needed advice, a place to stay, or a stern but loving talking-to.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Shirley Higgs; his children, Tessa Higgs and Byron Higgs (Jennifer); his three grandchildren, Jaelyn, Harrison, and Jackson Higgs; as well as bonus grandkids, Camille, Harris, and DeLanie Moore. He is also survived by his nine siblings, Grace Hornbeak (Charles), Laconia Higgs Jr. (Lynnie), Bernice Brown (Walter), Ruth "Birdie" Stephens, Ima Moss (Paul), Paul Higgs (Magdelyn), Robert Higgs, Donald Higgs, and Judy Higgs. Lastly, he leaves behind dozens of nieces, nephews, "adopted" grandchildren, relatives, and friends.

James 's life was a testament to the power of kindness, the joy of family, and the love of music and sports. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
