Jimmie was born in Madison County apart of Way, Mississippi. Jimmie was the first born to James Garrett and Verneda Thomas-Garrett on November 13, 1932. Jimmie attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church, which led to Jimmie accepting Christ at an early age.

Jimmie attended school in Jackson, Mississippi where he started an education.  Jim joined the Army in 1951 and served through 1953. Jimmie met the love of his life Essie Mae Berry and was united in holy matrimony on February 21, 1955. To this union Jimmie L. Garrett, Jr. (Son), and Deborah E. Garrett (Daughter). Jim and Essie moved to Kansas City, MO in 1958. Jimmie received his GED and later received the GI Bill and took 2 years of television /radio repair service. Jimmie went on to receive his Bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. Jimmie continued his education in Warrensburg, MO, where he received his Master's Degree. He taught at the Kansas City Vocational Technical Center for over 20 years. He was a member of Metropolitan Missionary Baptist church since 1958 and taught Sunday school in men's bible class where he was a member since 1958. Jimmie departed this life on Saturday September 10, 2022. He was preceded in death by James Garrett (father), Verneda McIsaac (mother), Bernice Garrett (sister), and Alberta Black (sister).

He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his loving (wife) Essie Mae Garrett of 67 years. One son Jimmie L. Garrett Jr. (Barbara).  Deborah E. Garrett (Daughter), (Grandsons) Steven M. Arps, Michael J. Garrett, Jordan P. Garrett, Elliot R. Garrett, and (Great grandchildren) Nyla Arps, Steven M. Arps, Jr. and Kaydon Garrett. Osie Smith (Sister) and Donald Ray Garrett (Brother), Pearl Simmons (Uncle), numerous nephews, nieces and friends.

Special Thank you to his Very long time friends James Warren and the Youngbloods (Neighbors). Also a special Thank You to Ascend Hospice for his care especially Olivia, his nurse.

Service for Mr. Garrett were be held Thursday, September 22, 2022 at   E.S. Eley & Sons Funeral Chapel. Burial Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
