John Willie Davis was born on August 19, 1944, the fourth child of Joe Samuel and Gertie Mae
(Meredith) Davis in Chester, Georgia in Dodge County. On Monday, April 8, 2019, God called for John
to come home. He was educated in the Eastman, Georgia Public School System. He is a 1965 graduate
of Peabody High School. In addition, John attended technical college in Atlanta, Georgia. His parents,
Mr. & Mrs. Joe S. Davis; his daughter, Felicia Michelle Davis-Webb; former spouse, Doris Bryant-
Davis; and siblings Betty Mae Tolbert, Carrie Pearl Turner, Emma Jane Davis-Louis, and Charles Davis
preceded him in death.
John accepted Christ at an early age under the leadership of Revered Robert Pooler at Springfield
Baptist Church in Chester, Georgia. John left home and joined the United States Army on August 17,
1967 and was honorably discharged on August 15, 1969. While in service, he received several honors
and medals including the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea)
and Sharpshooter (Rifle). John retired from the United States Postal Service on December 31, 2010 after
21 years of service. He was well known and loved by all his co-workers and friends.
John wed Gwendolyn Williams Davis on July 4, 2015. He was a loving and devoted husband. John and
"Gwen" were best friends and talked to each other about absolutely everything! He raised his two
grandchildren Jayla and Jonathan Webb since the tender ages of 9 and 5 respectively. He cherished his
grandchildren dearly and they leaned on him for all their needs. They lovingly called him "Grandad."
John made friends wherever he lived and traveled. He helped many family members and loved ones and
was known for his kindness and generosity. His close family members and friends referred to him as
"Rabbit/Uncle Rabbit."
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Gwendolyn Williams Davis of Kansas City, Missouri; his
son, Reginald Bernard Davis of College Park, Georgia; his grandchildren, Jayla Leshay Webb and
Jonathan Ruben Webb of Atlanta, Georgia
;
his step-children, Adrian Dion Williams and Marissa Jabre
Williams of Kansas City, Missouri; his step-grandchildren, Maliah Lanay Williams and Myles Daniel
Crain-Williams of Kansas City, Missouri; his siblings, Ruby Dunbar and Ruth Dunbar of Augusta,
Georgia; Carolyn (Eric) Edwards of Clarksville, Tennessee; Willie James (Ingrid) Davis of Jacksonville,
Florida; his aunts, Lena King of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Leila Presley of Tampa, Florida; and a
host of other relatives and friends.
John was loved by all and shall forever be cherished in our hearts.
Visitation for Mr. Davis will be held 3:00 P.M. Saturday, April 13, 2019, at E. S. Eley & Sons Funeral Chapel. Services for Mr. Davis will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 19, 2019 at Gus Thornhill's Funeral Home. Burial Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
