Lillie Thurman Thompson's Obituary
Lillie Thurman-Thompson was born October 21, 1913, to Will and Pearlie Whitley-Thurman in Clarendon, Arkansas. She was the fourth of six children born to this union. Her siblings were Osborn, Cecil, Utah, Erma and Willie Ophelia Thurman; all of which preceded her in transition to Glory.
Lillie confessed a hope in Christ in 1926, and was baptized in Clarksdale, MS. She later moved to Clarendon, AR and united with Oak Grove Baptist Church. In 1940, she moved to Pine City, AR and joined the First Baptist MBC of Pine City. There she served as an Usher on the Senior Usher Board, Mission Ministry and treasurer of the Benevolence Ministry.
Through marriage, Lillie was the biological mother of three daughters, Essie Mae Thurman, Ophelia Brazle and Cordia M. Upshaw. In 1942, she met and married the late Aaron McClinton. To this union step families were blended.
In 1970, Lillie moved to Kansas City, MO and married Marion Thompson. Again, step families were blended adding additional sons and daughters. She joined Park Avenue M.B.C. under the pastorate of Rev. Richard Linued. There, her work included serving on the Senior Usher Board and for a period of time she was the Recording Secretary. She also participated diligently with the Darcus Circle of the Mission Ministry. She was faithful in her work in the church until her health failed and she was no longer physically able to attend. However, her work did not end there. She has given so much to those in need and less fortunate, including wisdom of advice, monetary gifts and personal services.
Mrs. Lillie Thurman-Thompson's work comprised of co-owning, managing and working the family farm of over 100 acres of cotton, soy beans and rice, working in private homes, head cook at local boarding houses and hotels. Upon making a life in Kansas City, she was the most sought-after child care-giver among teachers in the Kansas City Area. She has maintained a life-long family relationship with parents and children whom she cared for.
Her hobbies were making beautiful quilts and fishing. Her favorite Bible verses were, "The Lord is my shepherd and I Shall not want." And "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God."
Mother Lillie Thurman-Thompson leaves to cherish her memory: 2 daughters, Ophelia Brazle of KCMO and Cordia Upshaw; stepdaughter, Viola Wardlaw both of Chicago, IL; granddaughter, Stella Mincey of Grandview, MO; grandson, Larry Kidd of K.C., MO; grandchildren gifted through marriage are Redell Thompson (LaVern) of Fayetteville, AR, Eric Thompson (Wanda) of Pine Bluff, AR, a chosen granddaughter, Dr. Mae O. Beard (Sylvester) of Mequon, WI; great-grandchildren, Henry Ray Mincey, Jr. of Grandview, MO, Jennifer Kidd of Columbia, MO; great-great-grandson, Henry Ray Mincey, III of St. Joseph, MO; numerous step-grand and great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins; special close knit families who are chosen sons, Tommy Jordan (Judy) family of Grandview, MO, Curtis Canady (Dr. Carlene) family of Morrilton, AR, Bobby Alderson (Dr. Ruth) family of Houston, TX along with a host of other loving relatives and friends.
Services for Mrs. Thompson will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 5, 2018, at Park Avenue Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Gregory Stevens officiating. Burial XII Gates Memorial Gardens.
