Maxine was the second child born April 15, 1935, to Tiny Young and Eddie Shockley in Scott, Arkansas. The family later moved to Little Rock, Arkansas. She attended Capital Hill Elementary and Dunbar High School.  Maxine accepted Christ at an early age at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Little Rock.

After high school she married Albert Gillerson and moved to Chicago, Illinois.  They joined Commonwealth Community Church Rev. William Samuels was her pastor.  She also worked there as the secretary of the food pantry.  She was dedicated to rearing her children and getting them involved in school activities.

Maxine and Albert shared more than 50 years of marriage and together raised four children.  Reginald Dwayne, Pamela Denise, Ronald Derrick and Rhonda Donna all of which preceded her in death and also her husband.  They were blessed with eight grandchildren, Anthony, Albert, Shenez, Elzy, Isaiah, Christian, Autumm and Reginald; from these grandchildren there are twelve great-grandchildren.

Maxine later moved to Kansas City, Missouri, when her health started failing in 2007.  She joined Friendship Church and was a member of Class #3 Deborah Hood's Sunday School Class.  They immediately became attached, along with Sister Lillie Tooke, whom she started calling on the phone.  She was a fun loving person who insisted we have family reunions. She involved herself in her children's activities; she also had a lots of friends.  Her grandchildren always hung out at her house.  The millennials loved her because she could relate to their problems.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her brother, Sam; sister, Irma who she was very protective of because she was the oldest; her grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to mourn her death.

Service for Mrs. Gillerson were held Saturday, December 28, 2019, at Friendship Baptist Church.  Burial Leavenworth National Cemetery.
