Maggie Lee Kolen's Obituary
Maggie Lee Morgan was the fourth of eight children born November 15, 1924, to the union of John and Sentenual Morgan.
She was preceded in death by Malvin Morgan, Evelyn Morgan, Lula Morgan, Virginia Morgan, Lizzie Morgan, and Hattie Morgan.
Maggie was united in marriage to John Kolen and to this union, two sons were born. After becoming a widow at an early age, Maggie relocated to Kansas City, MO where she lived the rest of her life.
Maggie attended public schools in Warren and Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
She attended Secretarial School and Business School in Kansas City.
She worked for several companies, including the GEM Store, and the Kansas City Star.
Becoming a member of society life was one of her special interests.
She was a member of several social clubs during the time when African American people could not use public buildings and thus enjoyed entertaining in social members' homes.
Maggie loved to entertain and she did that well.
Later she became a member of the Urban League Guild and the Kansas City, MO Branch of the NAACP, accomplishing recognition as both a Senior Life Member and a Golden Heritage Member.
It was evident, even at an early age, that Maggie was an adventurous beauty.
She always had her make-up, hair, and outfits appropriate and in order.
Her beauty lead to a modeling career where she modeled for fashion shows in the city.
Longtime friend, and well known business woman, Inez Kaiser, even had her model in New York.
Maggie was pictured in the K C Call.
She treasured this life experience and maintained a collection of newspaper articles and pictures.
Another interest lead to her livelihood.
Maggie was articulate and very organized.
So, in 1967, she was hired to be the "one woman" who managed the ROTC Department for the Kansas City, MO School District.
This position required office administrative skills, knowledge of military expectations, literary skills and the ability to successfully manage office affairs for several Colonels.
She retired in 2010, after forty-three years of service to this department.
Traveling and photography added to one of her most rewarding experiences.
She traveled with the OASIS (Older Adults in Service) group of Paseo Baptist Church.
She traveled to the Holy Land.
She also traveled to Africa, Hawaii, Paris and many cities throughout the United States.
Most of all, Maggie was proud of her sons, daughter-in-laws, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews for their accomplishments,
which included college graduates in the fields of business, communications, education, finance, medicine, pharmacy and law.
Maggie attended each of their graduations and weddings, always giving support and love.
She kept up with them by calling and sending cards with a special token tucked inside.
Maggie leaves to cherish her memory: her two sons, Bobby (Dianna) Kolen of Kansas City and Billy (Karen) Kolen of Marshville, North Carolina; one brother, James Morgan (Sybil) of Warren, Arkansas; five grandchildren, Gregory (Karen) Kolen, Kym (Singleton) Coles, Dr. Errol (now deceased) and wife (Ines) Kolen, Michael (Cristal) Kolen, and Kaila Smith; twelve great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Services for Mrs. Kolen will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 26, 2018, at Paseo Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Briscoe officiating.
Burial Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
Friends may call from 10:00 A.M. until service time Monday at the church.
