Matthew O'Hara Maiden , known for his playful spirit, warm heart, and deep love for his family and community, passed away on April 26, 2026, in Kansas City, MO, at the age of 67. Born on December 21, 1958, in Clarksdale, MS, he was the beloved son of the late Matthew and Lola (Drake) Maiden. Matthew lived a life centered around connection, laughter, and showing up for the people and communities he cared about most.

From an early age, Matthew was grounded in faith and values that would guide him throughout his life.

Matthew dedicated a meaningful portion of his career to his work at the Kansas School for the Deaf, where he served as a dorm teacher. He found purpose in this work and was deeply connected to the Deaf and hard of hearing community. Prior to that, he worked at St. Joseph Medical Center. Through his years of service, he built lasting relationships and made a meaningful impact—not only through his work, but through his presence, patience, and understanding.

In 1993, he was united in marriage to Monique (Starks) Maiden, and together they built a life grounded in partnership, love, and shared experiences.

Matthew loved spending time with his family, enjoying trips to the casino, and being in community with those who knew and appreciated him best. His humor, easygoing nature, and the way he could make people smile will be remembered by all who knew him.

Above all, Matthew was a father. He was the proud father of three children, Miriam O'Keedra Maiden of Portland, OR, Matthew O'Hara Maiden, II and wife Kayla, and Matilda O'Nique Maiden of Kansas City, MO; each of whom carries forward his spirit, humor, and love.

He also leaves to fondly remember him: six grandchildren, Markeese Maiden, Kaizon Maiden, Kiimora Washington, Marsaun Maiden, Yaiir Maiden, and Sariiya Maiden; sister, Miriam O'Neida Maiden of Garland, TX; nephews, Ronald G. Raglin, II of Kansas City, MO, and Nehemiah D. Lewis and his wife, Juels of Woodward, OK; along with a host of uncles, cousins, and extended family who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lola (Drake) Maiden-Anderson; his father, Matthew Maiden; and his sister, Monika O'Dette Maiden-Raglin.

He brought joy wherever he went, and that joy will carry on through all who loved him.
