Ms. Mattie Bell Latimer was born September 3, 1936 in Statesboro, Ga. She was the 4th child born to the union of Clinton and Mary Latimer.

Mattie was united in marriage to James Bernard Perkins on December 12, 1956 in Jasper, South Carolina. At the time, James was serving as an Airman in the United States Air Force. Soon after, the couple moved to James' hometown of Kansas City, Mo. where they began their family. To this union 4 sons were born, James B. Jr, Clinton, Marlon and Douglass. Mattie cherished her family and they felt the same about her. She blessed them with her soulful cooking and powerful voice.

Mattie was a true matriarch. She lead her family with care and comfort and was a strong and committed believer. She was committed to keeping the principles of the Word first and foremost in her daily life and in lives of her family.

Mattie was a founding member of Palestine Missionary Baptist Church. She served in many capacities including the usher board, with her most impactful position being the Senior Choir Director. Her voice was a gift from God and she enjoyed sharing it with those around her. There were many times that she received a standing ovation for her solos.

Mattie worked for AT&T in Kansas City, where she retired as a Supervisor in 1992. In her free time, she enjoyed spending time with her family, shopping and bowling. She took special joy in her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Always making sure that they were well loved and taken care of.

Mattie will be missed by her four sons: James (Darlene) of Blue Springs, Clinton, Marlon and Douglass (Kim) all of Kansas City. God daughter Joanna of Kansas City. Five grandchildren: Marlana, Janelle, Katrina, Jewel and Tristan. Eight great grandchildren. Four sisters: Clenzy, Rosa, and Deloris all of Georgia, Caroline of Texas and two brothers Clinton and Lushious. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, Clinton and Mary, her husband James and sisters Birtha Latimer and Verlean Ellis.
