MICHAEL E. LUSTER

Michael Eugene “Shaq” Luster was born on May 3, 1978, to James Carter and Wanda “Jean” Luster in Kansas City, Missouri, where he was raised, built his life, and remained throughout his years. On August 11, 2026, Michael peacefully transitioned from this life, leaving behind a legacy rooted in love, family, and togetherness. 

Michael was preceded in death by his father, James Carter; sister, Latrece McCloud; grandmother, Jewell Luster; aunt, Annie Luster; and cousin, Charles “Boo Boo” White. 

Michael graduated from Paseo Performing Arts High School, Class of 1996, where his creativity was expressed through his love for drawing. He continued his education and proudly earned an Associate Degree in Arts, an accomplishment that represented another meaningful milestone in his life. 

Professionally, Michael dedicated more than 20 years of service to the Internal Revenue Service. His longevity and commitment to his career reflected the stability, consistency, and dependability that were such an important part of the man he was. 

Affectionately known as “Shaq,” Michael was a true family man with a generous heart, a great sense of humor, and a natural ability to bring people together. He loved supporting Kansas City sports enjoying football and baseball, but basketball was the game closest to his heart. He loved watching it, talking about it, and enjoying a friendly game himself. His admiration for Shaquille O’Neal ran so deep that it eventually earned him the nickname “Shaq,” a name that became a part of who everyone knew and loved him to be. 

Michael also loved to barbecue, and there was something special about the way he could turn a simple cookout into a gathering filled with good food, laughter, stories, love, and friendship. Those cookouts were more than something he enjoyed—they were part of how he kept his family connected. He was the big cousin everyone looked up to, a mentor, and a trusted resource to many. He had a special way of talking to people, offering guidance without judgment and explaining when you were wrong without ever making you feel like the bad guy. No matter what he may have been going through himself, Michael always seemed to find a way to be there for someone else. To his family, he was one of the last of the glue, helping to keep everyone connected and close. 

Michael will forever be cherished for his generous heart, loyalty, humor, wisdom, and unwavering love for his family. His laughter and stories will be missed, but the memories created around the grill, during family gatherings, and over countless conversations will continue to bring smiles for years to come. His presence brought comfort and his love brought people together, and those are the pieces of Michael that will remain in the hearts of those who loved him most.

Michael leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Wanda “Jean” Luster; son, Elijah Luster; daughter, Shania Gipson; sister, Ursula Carter; nephew, Michael “Man Man” McCloud Jr.; niece, Tyisha Carter; nephew, Caleb Rogers; extended sister, LaToyia Wallace; and a host of family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
