Odetta Allen's Obituary
Odetta Milton Allen, age 82, was the first born of twelve siblings to Thomas Louis Milton and Erma Rosedale Henderson on February 2, 1936, in Forrest City, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by both parents; four brothers Roy, Darnell, Curtis, Bobby and three sisters Carol Anne, Juanita and Joyce.
Odetta moved to Rosedale Kansas during her elementary school years and accepted Christ at an early age and later joined Friendship Baptist Church at 43rd and Montgall under the late Pastor I.H. Henderson, Jr.
Upon graduating from Sumner High School in Kansas City, KS, shortly after she met the love of her life Sam Earl Allen and they were united in Holy Matrimony on November 14, 1954, where they shared 52 years of marriage prior to his death. To this union four daughters were born.
Odetta lifelong service at Friendship Baptist Church consisted of attending Sunday School Class #3, WMU Good Samaritan, Senior Ministry and attending morning worship.
Odetta retired from the University of Kansas Hospital as an Operating Room Scrub Technician for over 25 years, after retiring the second time from John Knox Village.
She enjoyed many activities which included her most prized hobby, her family and her love for her grandchildren and the time she spent with them. Along with her other hobbies, gardening, fishing, cooking and theatrical events and a self-taught seamstress. As a young girl she would become over-whelmed of the thought of attending the market with her father so she could go and pick out the pattern of material that she wanted from the flour and sugar sacks for her next clothing design. She valued the importance of being a good steward of your finances. Before there was E.F. Hutton or Charles Swab there was "Odetta Finances", which she instilled these valuable life skills in her children.
She leaves to celebrate her life: her four daughters; Carol (Terrance) Lane of Birmingham, Alabama, Linda (Marshall) of Independence, MO, Geraldine Allen Lawson of K.C. MO, Regina Allen-Raytown, MO; sisters, Ernestine Overton of Detroit, Michigan, Cecilia Crawford of K. C. MO, Rosemary Milton, Carrie Milton both of K.C. KS; grandchildren, Marshall Brown, Jr., Moniece Brown, Sonya (Jeremiah) Wynnterz, Nicole (William) Ekotson, Kaylan Allen; great- grandchildren, Dy'Sha Duncan Allen, Sam Perry Allen, Ava Brown, William Ekotson, David Ekotson and a host of In-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Services for Mrs. Allen will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, June 25, 2018, at Friendship Baptist Church. Burial Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until service time Monday at the church.
