Verna Mae Fanning was born June 20, 1938, in DeWitt, MO to Adrian Goodson Childs and Lula belle Cooper Childs.

She later moved to Kansas City with her family where she grew up and attended school. Verna graduated from Lincoln High School in 1956. Afterwards, she enrolled in Longview Community College and attended Eileen Beauty College where she received her cosmetology license in 1964.

During that time, she also met and married her husband, Marcellus and together they had two sons, Marcus and Maurice.  In 1966, Verna began working for the Internal Revenue Service from which she retired in 1996, after 30 years of faithful service.  Mrs. Fanning enjoyed retirement by having lunch with her friends and colleagues and visiting her grandchildren until the Lord called her home on Wednesday, February 28, 2018.

Verna accepted Christ at an early age. As an adult, she attended Travelers Rest Baptist Church under Pastor Leon Burns for many years until making the transition to Genesis Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership Reverend Lesley J. Winfield, Jr.

Verna is preceded in death by her parents, Adrian and Lulabelle Childs; brothers, William Ray Childs and Adrian Goodson Childs and her husband of 49 years, Marcellus Fanning.

She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Marcus and Maurice Fanning of Kansas City, MO, daughter-in-law, LaConda Fanning; granddaughter, Logan Fanning; grandsons, Terry and Quame Glover of Virginia Beach, VA and a host of nieces and nephews friends and other relatives.

Services for Mrs. Fanning will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Genesis Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Leslie Winfield, Jr. officiating.  Burial Mt. Moriah Cemetery.  Friends may call from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the church.
